Project
Early detection of the presence of a respiratory tract infection
using the indicator on the medical mask
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, significant health concerns
has been identified. We have seen the failure of healthcare facilities to cope
with the large influx of infected patients. Many patients were diagnosed with
advanced pneumonia, which led to difficult situations.
The COVID-19 virus mainly entered the human body through the respiratory tract,
and during the incubation period did not show any symptoms, thereby enabling an infected
person to spread it among his contacts.
What can be done to prevent such disastrous consequences? Early diagnosis
of the virus could significantly limit its spread.
Our team studied the research results of scientists and developers of express
test systems, according to the results of which several interesting facts were
pointed out:
1. Patients with infectious diseases of the respiratory system have a changed composition of exhaled gases, which gives the right to assert the possibility of detecting the presence of diseases by exhalation;
2. Devices designed for rapid testing of respiratory tract infections based on
expiratory analysis have a high price for devices for individual use, and their
disinfection or the use of disposable mouthpieces, when used by a large
number of people, does not guarantee safety.
These facts prompted our team to search for solutions that allow us to
develop a cheap version of the biomarker that will signal the patient to
undergo a medical examination, without waiting for a deterioration in well-being.
The faster the patient gets to a medical facility, the less contact they
will have to infect.
This is a simple and inexpensive solution - a medical mask with a biomarker.
The principle of action is the response of a biomarker to a change in the
composition of expired gases. The color of the biomarker changes from
yellow to brown as a function of the degree of change in the composition of
exhaled gases.
As an ancillary tool, it is suggested to use a mobile application
that will say the user if it is necessary to contact a medical facility.
What does the use of these biomarkers bring to the consumer? The consumer will be able to detect an infection at an early stage, begin treatment before complications occur and avoid mass contamination of their contacts.
What does the use of these biomarkers bring to consumer health care? The drugs may help patients at an earlier stage of infection and will help to avoid treatment of complications caused by this infection. The use of emergency and life support equipment will be reduced.
At the same time, it should be noted that this biomarker is not a test for the presence of infection, it only signals the patient about changes in the composition of exhaled gases and the possible presence of infection, which means that there is a need to undergo a medical examination for infections in the respiratory tract.
